In 1981, Tomás Garbizu composed El clavecín vasco (The Basque Harpsichord) for cello and piano. In this work, the author alternates between typical dances of the Baroque era, such as the Minuet or the Gavotte, and dances from Basque folklore, such as the contrapás, fandango and bolero, evoking the suite, a typical form from the Baroque period, as its title suggests. This work shows Garbizu’s predilection for Basque folklore, specifically Basque dance.
Some of the pieces in El clavecín vasco - Belatsarena, Gavotte and Basque Minuet - were originally conceived for piano. The composer's relationship with the cellist Gabriel Verkós probably led him to transcribe them for cello and piano. Others were originally composed for cello and piano.
